The bikini is typically a women's two-piece swimsuit. One part of the attire covers the breasts and the other part covers the crotch and part of or the entire buttocks, leaving an uncovered area between the two. Merriam--Webster describes the bikini as "a woman's scanty two-piece bathing suit" or "a man's brief swimsuit". It is often worn in hot weather, while swimming or sunbathing. The shapes of both parts of a bikini resemble women's underwear, and the lower part can range from revealing thong or g-string to briefs.
While two-piece bathing suits had been worn on the beach before, the modern bikini was invented by French engineer Louis Réard in 1946. He named it after Bikini Atoll in the Pacific, the site of the Operation Crossroads nuclear weapon tests in July that year.
The bikini is perhaps the most popular female beachwear around the globe, according to French fashion historian Olivier Saillard due to "the power of women, and not the power of fashion". As he explains, "The emancipation of swimwear has always been linked to the emancipation of women. By the mid 2000s, bikinis had become a $811 million business annually, according to the NPD Group, a consumer and retail information company. The bikini has boosted spin-off services like bikini waxing and the sun tanning industries
Predecessors of the bikini date to antiquity, in Çatalhöyük and the Greco-Roman world. Art dating from the Diocletian period (286--305 AD) in Villa Romana del Casale, Sicily depicts women in garments resembling bikinis in mosaics on the floor. The images of ten women, dubbed the "Bikini Girls", exercising in clothing that would pass as bikinis today are the most replicated mosaic among the 37 million colored tiles at the site. Archeological finds, particularly in Pompeii, show the Roman goddess Venus wearing a bikini. A statue of Venus in a bikini was found in a cupboard in the southwest corner in Casa della Venere, others were found in the front hall. A statue of Venus was recovered from the tablinum of the House of Julia Felix, and another from an atrium at the garden at Via Dell'Abbondanza.
The groundwork for the modern bikini began to be laid in 1907, when Australian swimmer and performer Annette Kellerman was arrested on a Boston beach for wearing a form-fitting one-piece swimsuit, which became an accepted beach attire for women by 1910. In 1913, inspired by the introduction of women into Olympic swimming, designer Carl Jantzen made the first functional two-piece swimwear, a close-fitting one-piece with shorts on the bottom and short sleeves on top.
By the 1930s, necklines plunged at the back, sleeves disappeared and sides were cut away. Hollywood endorsed the new glamour with films such as Neptune's Daughter in which Esther Williams wore provocatively named costumes such as "Double Entendre" and "Honey Child".
With new materials like latex and nylon, by 1934 the swimsuit started hugging the body and had shoulder straps to lower for tanning.
By the early 1940s two-piece swimsuits were frequent on American beaches. Hollywood stars such as Ava Gardner, Rita Hayworth and Lana Turner tried similar swimwear or beachwear. Pin ups of Hayworth and Esther Williams in the costume were widely distributed.
Finally, the modern bikini was introduced by French engineer Louis Réard and fashion designer Jacques Heim in Paris in 1946. Réard was a car engineer but by 1946 he was running his mother's lingerie boutique near Les Folies Bergères in Paris. Heim was working on a new kind of beach costume. It comprised two pieces, the bottom large enough to cover its wearer's navel. In May 1946, he advertised the bathing suit, known as the "Atome," as the world's "smallest bathing suit". Réard named his swimsuit the "bikini", taking the name from the Bikini Atoll, one of a series of islands in the South Pacific where testing on the new atomic bomb was occurring that summer. Historians assume Reard termed his swimsuit the "bikini" because he believed its revealing style would create reactions among people similar to those created by America's atomic bomb in Japan just one summer earlier.

www.a3network.com Miss Exxxotica "Bikini Contest". A3 Network. Twitter: @A3Network. EXXXOTICA Miami Beach, presented by HotMovies.com, celebrated love and sex, and the six-year expo has become a staple in the SoBe community. Thousands of returning fans and first time attendees flocked to the convention center despite the high temperatures and impending rapture. Leading national and local media reported from the expo floor, documenting EXXXOTICA's wide range of seminars, stage shows, contests, exhibitors and adult stars. The media and fan consensus labeled the fan expo as an immense triumph and a rousing success.
"EXXXOTICA continues to improve every year, and as a result, we experience overwhelming support from the community of Miami," said J. Handy, Director of Victory Tradeshow Management. "An increased female focus of attractions made for a much higher percentage of women this year. We spoke with as many female and male attendees as possible, and the feedback was extremely positive. Thank you to all the sponsors and exhibitors who contributed to the overall success of the show. We are looking forward to our next stop, EXXXOTICA Chicago."
MiamiBeach411.com states that the fan experience was even better at the 2011 expo. Matt Meltzer of the popular South Beach website wrote, "EXXXOTICA is one of the most accessible, carefree, fun events that comes to South Florida every year. Because much like the [adult] industry itself, EXXXOTICA doesn't take itself too seriously and just wants people to have a good time. And as long as the good folks who run it maintain that attitude, they'll always be welcome in South Florida."
"A walk on the wild side," is what Miami's CBS 4 called EXXXOTICA in its news segment from the convention. The popular piece ran 12 times, while focusing on all the expo offered to fans, from videos and gadgets to celebrities. "People loving love!"
This year's show, billed as a "Celebration of Sexy," ran at the Miami Beach Convention Center in South Beach from Friday, April 18th to Sunday, April 20th. More than 22,000 fans packed into the show to experience its biggest bang ever with more stars, booths, features, exhibits, contests, entertainment and just more, more, more of everything! Each day of the three-day adult consumer show displayed significant growth and improvement from the numbers of the past two years, with an overall increase of attendees around 40% from last year's numbers. Following early releases on Subliminal, Filtered and a host of other key dance labels a few years back, Robbie Rivera has since been inundated with offers and has worked with, and had tracks released on labels that include Defected, Serious, Azuli, Duty Free, Positiva, Ministry of Sound, Credence, Echo, Virgin, Atlantic, Strictly Rhythm, Multiply, Tommy Boy, Manifesto, Ministry Of Sound, Time, Sony, Mute, Universal, Epic... etc. As well as remixing many International artists including Faithless, Felix Da Housecat, Soulsearcher, Darryl Pandy, Sybil, Funky Green Dogs, RES, Moloko, Victoria Beckham, Madonna, Puretone, and Brandy, to name but a few.
In March 2000, Robbie's infectious piano track 'Bang' turned out to be one of the most in demand tracks at the Winter Music Conference in Miami. The hugely successful Time Records picked up the rights for Europe, and Multiply winning the race for the domestic license. 'Bang' made Number One in every UK Dance chart, shot onto the Radio One, Kiss FM, and Capital playlists (as well as all key regional stations), was a Danny Rampling Powerplay record and picked up huge support from the likes of Dave Pearce, Judge Jules and Pete Tong.
Dozens of features and excellent reviews appeared across the UK press from Music Week through to 7 (Essential House Tune), DJ (Recommended, In The Box), Mixmag (Big Tunes), M8, Ministry, Wax, I-DJ, The Mirror, and even TOTP magazine! 'Bang' was also play listed by The Box and MTV, and added to almost every major compilation album; the single eventually reached the top 15 in the CIN Chart following its release in August 2002.
After continuous airplay (as much on Radio One as Spiller and Robbie Williams) 'Bang' was also used throughout the Sydney Olympics and re-entered the national UK chart due to the increased demand, suddenly everyone knew the name Robbie Rivera. Since then, Robbie's been working away on a host of releases under various guises as well as several new releases on his JUICY MUSIC label. The hugely original 'Feel This' followed and was picked up by Strictly Rhythm after having had the full support of Danny Tenaglia out in Miami and Ibiza 2001. 'Feel This' reached Number One in the US Billboard Club Chart.
In an interview for Billboard, Tenaglia praised Robbie's production and sound and has since asked Robbie to work with him on a future collaboration. "Funk-a-tron" was then picked up by Erick Morillo's Subliminal label at the end of 2001, and as such created a huge interest in Robbie, with his brand new sound securing him yet another buzz chart track, supported by Tong on Radio One and all the usual suspects.
The new vocal version, unveiled in 2002 on Direction Records in the UK, has had the support of every club and radio DJ worth their salt and is currently being played everywhere in Ibiza by the likes of Sanchez, Darren Emmerson et al. 2002 also saw a very successful Miami conference with Robbie doing a live mix for Danny Ramplings show on Radio One to kick off events. His collaboration with fellow Miami based producer Chicco Secci, (Rockik) entitled "Memories" was the cause of much A&R interest and was picked up by Time Records who have just signed it on to Serious Records in the UK. Rockik is due for release later this year is set to be a big crossover hit for Robbie and Chicco.
Also picked up in Miami this year, from SFP Records, is the Robbie Rivera and Billy Paul production "Sex" due for a UK release in September on 352 Recordings, with remixes from Warren Clarke and Filterheadz. Recent underground productions have also surfaced on Defected, Fluential, Azuli, and Fuju Records. The Kolaborators "Music All Around", another production with Billy Paul, is currently on promo on Futuregroove with mixes from Robbie and Wally Lopez.
And last but not least Robbie's own Juicy Music label gets back on track with a new deal through Serial Killer in Spain, and the first release of 2002 "The Hum Melody" has just made Pete Tong's Essential New Tune live from the Berlin Love Parade to 1.5 Million people. Aside from DJing regularly in his hometown of Miami, Robbie DJ's around the world. Over the coming months he will be Djing in Ibiza, Barcelona, The UK, Montreal, Vancouver, Greece, Portugal, Italy, NYC, San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Chicago.
