This video is of a lesson in Oct 2008 with Connected Riding instructor Diane Sept at a clinic in Eugene Oregon. This was a super fun lesson with lots of different exercises and transitions to different gaits. My 11 year old Tennessee Walking horse "Radar" is naturally (multi) gaited (barefoot), but he has poor front end conformation (toes out). He is loose and shakesnods at the walk, which can jiggle me right out of position. When I am riding correctly his best (fluid & smooth) gaits are the flatwalk and runwalk. He has been offering to trot lately. In this lesson we worked on transitioning him to gait by getting lighter, instead of getting after him.

What gait is this chestnut gaited horse doing? The video was taken at a gaited horse clinic and different people were trying different horses, so there is an "adjustment" period of time while the horse gets used to the rider, and the rider tries to determine how to use his body to communicate with the horse to get the smoothest gait from the horse.

Gaited Endurance Horse in Training

Quite a Sugarfoot is a registered Tennessee Walking Horse in training for the Endurance Riding circuit, a sport dominated by Arabian horses. However, many gaited horses are now in the sport today. In this video, you will see Sugarfoot practicing for her vet check "trot out", working on the "Pessoa" lunge line to round out her back muscles, and working on a German Martingale (with me on her back) to achieve the same "rounding" technique with her back to strengthen it. In this video, you will see her in a multitude of gaits -- big flat-walk, rack, pace, trot & canter. I chose "My Maria" for the song because Sugarfoot is "My Maria" -- this song reminds me in every way of her and the way she makes me feel!

Quite a Sugarfoot is a registered Tennessee Walking Horse. I am training her for endurance riding -- where the field is dominated by Arabians. There are many gaited horses, like Sugarfoot, on the endurance circuit today. In this video, I am training her to do the "trot out" that she will do at endurance vet checks. The "trot-out" is necessary before an endurance ride & during the ride so that the vets can tell if a horse is sound & fit to continue. In this video, she is doing a beautiful flat-walk at first (that I'm sure the vets might appreciate but not accept at the vet check), but I finally get her to trot like she is supposed to. Most people don't know that walkers trot -- as Sugarfoot is doing in her "trot out". She also run-walks, paces, racks & does the stepping pace. At the vet check "trot out", gaited horses don't have to trot for the vets -- as long as they show the vets a nice middle gait. Sugarfoot's gait at "trot out" just happens to be a trot. Many gaited horses gait (rack, run-walk, pace, etc.) at the vet checks.
