A Personal Perspective About the Dangers of Alcohol Abuse up

This program by the National Institues of Health features narratives of seven women recovering from problems with alcohol. These stories make it clear that it's possible to miss danger signs and that social drinking can become problem drinking, which in turn can evolve into addiction. Abuse and alcoholism are often perceived as problems that only affect men, but alcoholism has been on the rise among women for the last 30 years.

Thomas Robinson, professor of pediatrics and internal medicine at Stanford University Medical Center, examines the health and societal problems children face, as well as possible solutions currently being studied to keep kids fit and happy. Obesity is no longer just an epidemic in the adult population. The rising rate of childhood obesity has also become a major concern for the medical community.

In this University of Southern California program, author and entrepreneur Robert Kuhn hosts a number of todays leading scientists, scholars and artists to debate how music and art appreciation reflect our culture, whether appreciation of the arts is learned or innate, and why we react so differently and individually to art and music. Guest speakers include Ray Kurzweil, author, inventor and futurist, poet Rhoda Janzen, USC professor of critical studies Todd Boyd, artist Todd Siler and Robert Freeman, Dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Texas at Austin.

Hailed as the "Queen of Carbon Science," Mildred Dresselhaus has been named the National Science Board's 2009 Vannevar Bush Awardee. Throughout her enduring career as a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), she has pushed the boundaries of scientific knowledge, expanding the field of carbon science into previously unknown realms. In this video from the National Science Foundation, Dresselhaus shares her efforts to increase opportunities for women in science, and discusses her research that has been at the forefront of numerous discoveries.

This video took a lot out of me to film. To be honest, the first time I tried to film it I ended up in tears. But I want to be real with you guys and let you know what I went through. I think it's important to talk about how mental illness and drug and alcohol abuse can so often go hand in hand.
