Imagine them live and in front of you- you would think you were on another planet. I want people to shine with human dignity and nobility. I rely on historical reference. By engaging with human genius I have tried to capture the past in my fashion. But we can never repeat, we are swept along by the changing times and our own experience. When we try to imitate we find ourselves doing something new. I see fashion as a proposal, a way for people to look more wonderful. This collection has taken care of itself. Without direction Andreas and I began choosing fabrics and delegating technical tasks from random ideas until something began to form. Half-way through, theatre director, Philip Green asked us if we could do costumes for a future production of a 17th century play, 'The Man of Mode' and at that point we realized the collection was looking rather 17th century. We said 'yes' to the play and from there on the 17th century became a conscious frame of reference. Sometimes it is more a question of mood eg a black coat made out of a rectangle folded into an envelope has a feeling of a scholars' gown; it somehow could represent the scientific interest of the age. This is a song I wrote about Vivienne Westwood and her influence on Punk Rock and the 1970s. I recorded this on a Saturday afternoon in the spare room. I started by recording a basic drum track, then using a Epiphone Gibson Standard I put down two guitar tracks, panned left and right, then I developed the lyrics, and final recorded my vocal track with a punkish (John Lyndon) feeling. I mixed down on a VS 840 using some reverb. The images are from the Internet. No offence meant to anyone it is my shot at a retrospective of Ms Westwood's life and work. Red Label Autumn/Winter 12-13 on the catwalk at London Fashion Week Over the years Red Label has collected ideas from history and from all over the world, but whatever we do we always end with a collection that is British, the world looked at through our eyes. This of course applies to all designers, they interpret according to their national perspective. Anyway, perhaps there is no city more cosmopolitan than London, so here we are with our British collection which shows an interest in everything. Tailoring, masculine- Savile Row inspired long Edwardian jackets (velvet trimmed), clean white shirts and Jermyn Street stripes, feminine tailoring- checks + tartans, lots of wool, mohair, blankets + capes, prints + jacquards taken from African body painting, Ikat, mottled effect prints that remind you of feathers and fur but also somehow of old ladies in Provence. For our evening looks paper taffeta and duchess in checks, stripes and block colours are used for wrapped and twisted dresses. More formal 'portrait' suits and cocktail dresses are shown alongside traditional 'smoking' suits in satin finish wool and glitter stretch. This show is in support of the Environmental Justice Foundation's (EJF) 'No Place Like Home' campaign for climate refugees. The t-shirts I designed, seen in the show, support the campaign to raise awareness of the plight of people who have been forced from their homes and land due to the increasing and intensifying impact of climate change.
