He says the US supports social reform and more freedoms in Egypt, yet at the same time supports the government of President Hosni Mubarak. Crowley describes Egypt as "an ally and friend of the United States, an anchor of stability in the Middle East which is helping us pursue a comprehensive peace in the Middle East". "We want to see change in Egypt, we want to see it done peacefully and stably."

The central bank in its latest report said there was continued growth in the past several weeks, but with "widespread signs" of slowing. Congressional elections are November second. One new survey showed that forty-nine percent of likely voters think Republicans should control Congress. Other polls find that about sixty percent of Americans think the country is going in the wrong direction. President Obama gave a speech near Cleveland, Ohio. He proposed a tax plan for businesses that make capital improvements, like buying new equipment. The president said: "And I'm proposing that all American businesses should be allowed to write off all the investment they do in 2011." He said this will help small businesses upgrade their plants and equipment, and will encourage large corporations to start putting their profits to work.Mr. Obama also proposed to permanently extend a tax credit for research and development.And he offered a plan for "rebuilding and modernizing" America's roads, rails and runways. He said it would create jobs and improve transportation. The plan would cost fifty billion dollars, but he promised it would not add to the budget deficit over time. (more)Build up to WW3 - CHINA Urges PEACE as US MARINES arrive in AUSTRALIA The first rotation of about 200 US marines has arrived in Australia on a six-month training deployment. A total of 2500 troops are expected to arrive over the next few years in Darwin to enhance the US's military presence in the Asia-Pacific. In November, US President Barack Obama and Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced plans to expand the US military presence in Australia. The two leaders had agreed to increase bilateral military cooperation and training in this way. Despite the fact that the US's final military presence in the country is to grow into a 2500-person Marine Air Ground Task Force, Australia's defense minister Stephen Smith insisted Wednesday morning that the marines and their entourage cannot be qualified as a military base. ''We don't have United States military bases in Australia and we're not proposing to,'' he told ABC radio from Darwin, where he greeted the marines together with the US Ambassador to Australia, Jeffrey Bleich. The first group of marines is scheduled to conduct joint military exercises with the Australian Defence Force as well as traveling to some neighboring nations for the same purpose.
