The Infinity is folded along the diagonal while the DIY Infinity is folded in half, horizontally. The Infinity starts off as a triangle, whereas the DIY Infinity begins as a rectangle. It seems like a trivial difference, but due to the shape, the Infinity fold works best with square scarves whereas the DIY version can be pulled off on thicker longer scarves. Also, because of the different starting shapes, the way the scarves drape are also slightly different. The very first uses of silk scarves are unclear with historians and archaeologists differing in their assessment of the very first use of silk scarves. Archaeologists believe that the first use of scarves (silk or otherwise) as an adornment was about 2000 years ago. In 1974 there was a discovery of a huge tomb dating back to ancient China about 260 BC. This tomb held more than 7000 Chinese warrior figurines who had pieces of silk cloth wrapped around their necks. Many historians believe China may well have been the birthplace of the "scarf" but a few centuries later. Around 230 BC the Chinese Emperor Cheng used pieces of silk cloth wrapped around the necks of his warriors to designate rank. His "officer" warriors wore silk scarves and the ordinary rank warriors were issued with cotton scarves. Ancient Egyptians used scarves as an indication of social status and authority. Ancient drawings show even Queen Nefertiti wearing a scarf under her conically shaped headdress -- ancient writings of the time seemed to indicate that the Queen's scarves were made from silk. The Roman Empire furthered the tradition of silk scarves which they often wore as a sign of social status either around their necks or their waists. How To Tie Your Scarf In 3 Ways [music] Latrira: Hello out there. I'm Latrira, and as you're getting ready for your night out on the town, I'm going to show you my three favorite ways to tie a scarf. Here to demonstrate, I have my lovely model, April. And for the first way, you're going to take your scarf and make one end shorter than the other. Drape around the neck, and then throw the longest end over the shoulder. And there you have your first way. The second way is a more casual look. Here, April has the scarf draped around her neck. For the second way, you take one end of the scarf and you make a loose knot. Taking the other end of the scarf, you pull it through the knot. And there you have your second way. The third way, you take your rectangular scarf and you fold it in half longways. After you did that, fold it again by keeping one hand one end and grabbing the other end. Last, drape it around your neck, bringing both ends to the front, and just tuck them underneath. And those are my three favorite ways to tie a scarf. [music] (less)
