December 2010 At the time of year when our concern for the elderly is particularly strong. We travel to Japan, the world's oldest nation, to discover the secret to dealing with advancing age. But have they got the answers? With 30 million people over 65, Japan's life expectancy is the highest in the world. In the countryside it seems that keeping active and sociable is the secret; "a positive mental attitude is what counts". Yet in Tokyo the story is not quite the same - in the city the elderly aren't active through choice. Meagre pensions mean they often work up to their deaths. More and more old people line the streets, "living one day to the next". With a huge burden falling on the younger generation, the technophile Japanese see robots as a solution, most recently developing a 'robot suit' walking aid, designed to increase independence. Old Age was a song Kurt Cobain wrote for Nevermind in March '91 that never made it past 'pre-production' because the band already had enough songs and he thought it didn't fit because of its different style. It's been said that he thought it was too poppy, even for Nevermind. He gave the song another shot in April '92 and recorded a rough acoustic version, but again the song still never fit with the rest so he gave the song to Hole. I feel this song could have been amazing if finished by Nirvana, so I based my cover off of Kurt's solo acoustic version with a little influence from the Nevermind outtake and finished up some of the lyrics that weren't complete. After 27 years of service to NYU's William and Sylvia Silberstein Institute for Aging and Dementia, Emma Shulman, LSW,MPH, its Senior Family Counselor, has retired at the age of 95 to pursue an MA in Cultural Anthropology, her fifth master's degree. Shulman came to the institute as a 68-year-old volunteer to study aging and add an advanced degree in gerontology to those she had earned in social work, business, and psychology. In 1980 she joined the staff as research coordinator of an NIA-supported longitudinal study of aging and Alzheimer's disease is still the largest and longest of its kind in the world and co-leader of two caregiver support groups that she and her colleague, Gertrude Steinberg, began at NYU's Alzheimer's Disease Research Center .
