In 1983, Audi Sport unleashed their new Rally weapon - The Audi quattro A2, in Corsica on The Tour de Corse Rally. They fielded two cars, registered as IN-NL 67 for H. Mikkola and also IN-NT 49 for M. Mouton. These A2's are a much lighter and more powerful version of the LWB quattro. Despite Audi's greatest efforts, their new cars were no match for the might of the Lancia 037's on Tarmac, and it was not until the loose surface rallies where the A2 began to dominate - ultimately bringing Hannu Mikkola the drivers World Rally Championship in 1983 and Stig Blomqvist in 1984 - going to prove that the A2 quattro was the most successful rally car ever built by Audi. Hannu Mikkola taught the Rally quattro how to walk. The Finn, who drove for Audi from 1980 to 1986, was considered a perfect gentleman -- a calm, friendly father who lived a healthy and active life. Mikkola, who was born in the city of Joensuu in 1942, was the most successful Rally driver of his era, posting 18 wins. He performed valuable development work for Audi during the initial phase of the World Championship project.
