A strong earthquake rocked a large swathe of northern Italy early on Sunday, causing at least three deaths and bringing about the collapse of rural factories and ancient bell towers in towns. The epicenter of the quake, which struck at 4:04 am (0204 GMT) and had a magnitude of 6.0, was in the plains near Modena in the Po River Valley and the tremors were felt in nearby regions. It was the strongest quake to hit Italy in three years. One person working a night shift died in the collapse of a factory and two were killed when a modern ceramics factory made of steel crumpled. Rescue officials were checking reports that other people were buried under rubble. There was serious damage to historic buildings such as the 14th century Estense Castle in the town of San Felice Sul Panaro, near the epicentre. There were fears that one of the towers of the famous mediaeval castle, the town's biggest attraction, could collapse. The town's main church was also severely damaged. Thousands of people living in the area rushed into the streets after the quake, which shook the major towns of Bologna, Modena, Ferrara, Rovigo, Verona and Mantua. No serious damage was reported in the larger, heavily populated towns and cities. A series of strong aftershocks hit the area, the strongest measuring 5.1, and local mayors ordered residents to stay out of their homes. The quake was centred 22 miles north-northwest of Bologna at a relatively shallow depth of 6.3 miles, the US Geological Survey said. The ... (less)

Even the previously untouchable Catholic Church's finances are finally under scrutiny. "Something like 55% of our salary goes to taxes. Really, from January 1 to July 15 we work for the state. Very nice!",the Peruzzis tell us. Not far from the Peruzzis, effervescent barista and café owner Francesco plays the tax system a little more loosely. "Often when you know a client really well, you don't print a receipt. This way you avoid paying tax. Sometimes you just have to try and work the system to get ahead." Both Francesco and the Peruzzis live and work in a city dominated by the architecture, iconography and sheer presence of the Catholic Church and as they struggle to pay their bills and get by, they've grown increasingly uncomfortable about the tax breaks and special privileges enjoyed by the Church. "I think everybody small or big must make a sacrifice." But that's something the Church doesn't seem to feel it needs to do and while the government is talking tough, many suspect nothing will change. The midfielder was playing for Livorno in the Serie B match at Pescara when he fell to the ground in the 31st minute. A defibrillator was used and Morosini, 25, was taken to hospital. As the trade continues, the environment continues to suffer and the death toll rises. "In Acerra, people have been dying for over 20 years. They don't even live to 50", says one woman. In the Campania region some of the most polluted areas are being used for agriculture and grazing, allowing highly toxic compounds like dioxin to enter the food chain. "My daughter has already had three high-risk pregnancies and one miscarriage", says a father who is forced to live 700 meters from toxic garbage bales. Almost a million tons of rubbish are stockpiled throughout the region and behind it all is the largest criminal organization in Italy, the Neopolitan Camorra.
