(more)The second flight of the JHAB project. The plan was a 2 hour flight, launched pre-dawn, to attempt to capture the sunrise, then land in Murrieta valley (30 miles from launch) -- However due to to a bad reading from the digital scale, we only had 3lbs of lift vs the planned 5.5 lbs of lift! This caused JHAB to lift very slowly, getting caught in a tree after liftoff, (bumping the GoPro HD camera to an angle) and then head the opposite direction - out towards the pacific ocean! The video chronicles her voyage, and luckily her recovery! (more)1-minute film clip of a NIKE HERCULES intercepting a Q-5 target missile (late 1950s) The Nike-Hercules system, a follow-up to the Nike-Ajax missile, was developed during the Cold War to destroy enemy bombers and enemy bomber formations, as well as serve as an anti-ballistic missile system. Western Electric, Bell Laboratories, and Douglas Aircraft Company were chief contractors for the system. Nuclear-armed Nike Hercules missiles were deployed in the United States, Greece, Italy, and Turkey, and with Belgian, Dutch, and US forces in West Germany. Conventionally-armed Nike Hercules missiles also served in the United States, Germany, Denmark, Japan, Norway, and Taiwan. The first deployments in Europe began in 1959 and the last nuclear-armed Nike Hercules missiles in Europe were deactivated in 1988. The Nike-Hercules missile systems sold to Japan (Nike J) were subsequently upgraded the internal guidance systems by replacing the original vacuum tube systems with transistorized ones. en.wikipedia.org

(more)High Altitude Balloon Flight, Oct. 4, 2011 Call Sign KJ4IES Project Team: Ernest Legg and Richard Jandrew Objective: To launch a high altitude balloon with HD video camera and temperature sensors. Altitude and lat/long to be provided by GPS. Launch Site: 10 miles west of Culpepper, VA at the Reva Volunteer Fire Station Recovery Site: Doswell, VA, approx. 7 miles west of King's Dominion theme park Flight Summary: Balloon ascended to an altitude in excess of 75000 feet before bursting due to very low atmospheric pressure. Temperature fell as low as -47 degrees F. Hardware payload returned via 3 meter parachute constructed of rip-stop nylon. Total flight duration was 93 minutes; 68 minutes ascending and 25 minutes descending. Distance traveled over land was 54 miles. Balloon system: A 1500 gram latex balloon was purchased from Scientific Sales, Inc. Balloons are sold by weight. This balloon was chosen because of the payload total weight. There were 2 packages tethered that weighed 6 pounds each. This follows FAA rules for unmanned amateur balloon flights. Hydrogen was used to fill the balloon as the cost of Helium is just too high. A 300 cubic foot cylinder and a reserve 80 cubic foot cylinder were rented from Airgas of Fredericksburg. A custom filling tube and hose were constructed and equipped with a shut-off valve. A large tarp covered the balloon during the fill. It was tied to the ground with nylon rope and tent stakes. Payload Hardware: Two cameras were used: a Kodak

(more)This is a abridged video taken from a high altitude balloon launched by the Make Stuff Club out of Kalamazoo College last spring. The balloon reached 90000 ft which is a near space altitude. It was tracked using ham radio (APRS), gps and a tinytrak3+. The video was taken using a kodak zi6. Still pictures are available at balloondogs.shutterfly.com . The noise that you are hearing is a siren used for recovery. It stops because the speaker membrane freezes in the -60 degree temperature. At the balloons highest point, visibility is roughly 350 miles. If you are interested in more of the technical specifics of the project, we would be happy to help with any questions. This video was edited by Ben Howard (bendhoward). The balloon design and launch was proposed and led by Noah Klugman. Special thanks to John Tucker and the SMART club from Kalamazoo. Keep your youtubes connected to this channel for more diy videos coming soon.

(more)See more informations: www.space-travellers.com There was a demon that lived in the air. They said whoever challenged him would die. Their controls would freeze up, their planes would buffet wildly, and they would disintegrate. The demon lived at Mach 1 on the meter, seven hundred and fifty miles an hour, where the air could no longer move out of the way. He lived behind a barrier through which they said no man could ever pass. They called it the sound barrier. (from the movie "The Right Stuff" - 1983) Fly me to the stars. Who now is knowing this famous song from Frank Sinatra? You can do this inside of your dreams, but also you can do it as a reality. In the last 10 years we used some jets to do high altitude flights (MIG-25, MIG 31), but currently one jet in the world is there with whom you can fulfill your dream The Russian MIG-29. You will fly on an altitude max. 23 km (75000ft) and you will be (beside your pilot) the highest flying human on the day of your flight. So, if you dreamed so long about that, stop it now! Take the chance of your life and fly to the stars. This video is showing Martin, one of your customers from Switzerland, who performed his edge of space flight in March 2010. If you want to do the same, do not hesitate to contact us directly.

(more)Persevering onward after Aarons flesh wound, and a medical stop in Pucuio, they challenge the 3rd mountain pass, climbing 70kms in 1 day to a plateau amidst 18000 ft plus snowcaps. Flabbergasted with oxygen deficiencies, and cold headwinds, this episode shows how exhausting high altitude really is. The three dirty compañeros aventureros endure a night in the negative degrees, sleepless at nearly 4000 meters. Their boards, tents, and backpacks are covered in frost in the morning, and they must straddle alpacas all night for warmth.

(more)Geoff (14) and I spent over 8 months building and planning this flight. Geoff studied for and passed the FCC exam to operate a ham radio station so that we could track the balloon as it flew. One of the fun things Geoff wanted to test was what would happen to a Twinkie after a wild ride over 3x as high as the airlines fly :) So we sent an unwrapped Twinkie up to an altitude of 95 thousand feet above the earth strapped to a weather balloon - and then Geoff ate it. In addition to the Twinkie we sent up a marshmallow (which swelled as the pressure dropped and according to the kids tasted "normal") some cameras (a Go Pro HD and Canon G9 running CHDK) and temperature sensors connected to an Arduino... Between the Twinkie and the marshmallow are some Rudy bracelets in honor of our sweet little friend Rudy - rudysbeat.com Visit http for photos and graphs of all the data collected. Original music written and performed by the amazing and talented Tad Wagner and available for download: tadwagner.bandcamp.com Unfortunately for us, both cards on the Go Pro and Canon G9 filled up before the burst :( The highest photos we got are from around 80K feet AGL. Real time location / altitude tracking was done with a tiny ham radio APRS transmitter connected to a GPS. Lots more info and photos at happycapsule.com
