Rare photos of the rooms inside Grey Gardens and the squalid conditions the Beales lived in before the raid in 1972 that threatened eviction from their home. There are before and after photos of the initial clean up in the 1970s and later photos of the renovation during the early 1980s after Washington Post Editor Ben Bradlee and his wife, journalist Sally Quinn, bought the estate from Edie Beale in 1979. If you want to know what true musical theatre genius is, listen to this Christine Ebersole singing "Around The World" from the musical Grey Gardens accompanied by composer Scott Frankel (lyrics by Michael Korie). I love this version even better than the orchestrated one. If you know the character of Edie from the "Grey Gardens" documentary, you can see that this is a picture perfect characterization. This will go down in theatre history as one of the all time great performances. And a word about the song, this is the kind of mature perfection one expects from a great Broadway musical. The lyrics are specific, they are perfectly rhymed to the point that you don't notice them -- ie they don't call attention to themselves. And they perfectly convey Little Edie using her own language. The film depicts the everyday lives of the two Edith Beales, a reclusive socialite mother and daughter of the same name who lived at Grey Gardens, a decrepit mansion at 3 West End Road in the wealthy Georgica Pond neighborhood of East Hampton, New York. The film was screened at the 1976 Cannes Film Festival, but wasn't entered into the main competition.[1] Edith "Big Edie" Ewing Bouvier Beale and her daughter Edith "Little Edie" Bouvier Beale were the aunt and first cousin of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis.
