Some kinds of E. coli can cause diarrhea, while others cause urinary tract infections, respiratory illness and pneumonia, and other illnesses. Still other kinds of E. coli are used as markers for water contamination.

(more)The deadly E.coli outbreak in Germany has claimed nearly 40 lives and has already been named the world's largest. The World Health Organization says the infection is spreading to European countries,Canada and even to the US. But unfortunately the source of the outbreak may be a scientist. We are still trying to figure out the evolution of that deadly strain, but the uncertainty has lead to a lot of questions. Mike Adams, health ranger and editor in chief of naturalnews.com, explains. (more)German officials on Friday said they had found the first direct evidence of deadly E. coli bacteria on vegetable sprouts thought to have killed 33 people and left over 3000 ill. State officials in North Rhine-Westphalia said they had identified the bacterium on bean sprouts found in the dustbin of a family of three, of whom two members fell ill with E. coli-related symptoms last month. Although the German government on Friday lifted its earlier warning against eating raw tomatoes, lettuce and cucumbers, European vegetable producers say the "crisis" has dealt a stinging blow to them at the peak of the fresh produce season in Europe. But why did Germany spend all these weeks to find the source of the outbreak? How much damage has already been done? And what will it take to prevent another outbreak? Inside Story, with presenter Hazem Sika, discusses with Hugh Pennington, a bacteriologist in Aberdeen; Meghnad Desai, an economist and Labour politician in London; and Masha Lipman, a political analyst at Carnegie Moscow Centre.

(more)Mike Adams Natural News June6, 2011 Even as the veggie blame game is now under way across the EU, where a super resistant strain of e.coli is sickening patients and filling hospitals in Germany, virtually no one is talking about how e.coli could have magically become resistant to eight different classes of antibiotic drugs and then suddenly appeared in the food supply. This particular e.coli variation is a member of the O104 strain, and O104 strains are almost never (normally) resistant to antibiotics. In order for them to acquire this resistance, they must be repeatedly exposed to antibiotics in order to provide the "mutation pressure" that nudges them toward complete drug immunity. So if you're curious about the origins of such a strain, you can essentially reverse engineer the genetic code of the e.coli and determine fairly accurately which antibiotics it was exposed to during its development. This step has now been done (see below), and when you look at the genetic decoding of this O104 strain now threatening food consumers across the EU, a fascinating picture emerges of how it must have come into existence. The genetic code reveals the history When scientists at Germany's Robert Koch Institute decoded the genetic makeup of the O104 strain, they found it to be resistant to all the following classes and combinations of antibiotics: • penicillins • tetracycline • nalidixic acid • trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazol • cephalosporins • amoxicillin / clavulanic acid

(more)Scientists probing the deadly E-coli strain that has left at least 19 people dead in 12 countries across Europe are finding that the bacteria combines a highly poisonous but common toxin with a rarely seen "glue" that binds it to a patient's intestines. It may take months for the global team of researchers to fully understand the characteristics of the bacteria that has infected about 1700 people, but they fear that this E-coli strain is the most toxic yet to hit a human population. Should the top priority now be to identify the source of the E-coli strain, to find solutions or to enforce precautions? Just where should we start? Inside Story discusses.
