(more)www.penguin.co.uk Claire Tomalin, author of Whitbread Book of the Year Samuel Pepys, paints an unforgettable portrait of Dickens, capturing brilliantly the complex character of this great genius. Charles Dickens: A Life is the examination of Dickens we deserve. Charles Dickens was a phenomenon: a demonicly hardworking journalist, the father of ten children, a tireless walker and traveller, a supporter of liberal social causes, but most of all a great novelist - the creator of characters who live immortally in the English imagination: the Artful Dodger, Mr Pickwick, Pip, David Copperfield, Little Nell, Lady Dedlock, and many more. At the age of twelve he was sent to work in a blacking factory by his affectionate but feckless parents. From these unpromising beginnings, he rose to scale all the social and literary heights, entirely through his own efforts. When he died, the world mourned, and he was buried - against his wishes - in Westminster Abbey. Yet the brilliance concealed a divided character: a republican, he disliked America; sentimental about the family in his writings, he took up passionately with a young actress; usually generous, he cut off his impecunious children.

(more)Black Lung, by Hazel Dickens: He's had more hard luck than most men could stand the mines were his first love, but never his friend he's lived a hard life, and hard he'll die Black Lung's done got him, his time is nigh Black lung, black lung, you're just biding your time Soon all this suffering I'll leave behind But I can't help wonder what God had in mind To send such a devil, to claim this soul of mine He went to the boss man, but he closed the door it seems you're not wanted when you're sick and you're poor you're not even covered in their medical plans and your life depends on the favors of man Down in the poorhouse on starvation's plan Where pride is a stranger and doomed is a man His soul full of coal dust 'ill his body's decayed Everyone but black lung's done turned him away. Black lung black lung your hand's icy cold As you reach for my life and you tourture my soul Cold as that waterhole down in that dar eave Where I spent my life's blood digging my own grave Down at the gravyard the boss man came With his little bunch of flowers Dear God! What a shame Take back those flowers, don't sing no sad songs The die has been cast now A good man is gone.

(more)The begining of this video, is an audio narrative by Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, with images of her, as well as a quote of hers about women in the IWW This Narative is commonly used on recordings to introduce the song "The Rebel Girl" in which Joe Hill dedicated to Elezabeth Guley Flynn. The second part, is the song "The Rebel Girl" Writen by Joe Hill, and performed by Hazel Dickens. I have used images of women who were (or are) members of the IWW. Only two were "supporters" and not members of the IWW (Emma Goldman and Charlotte Anita Whitney) Emma Goldman: Well known anachist writer and feminist, took part in the IWW free speech fight during the first world war. Helen Keller: Mostly known for her disability, was an active member of the IWW and influential feminist. Grace Silver: Mother of once famous actress Queen Silver. Active organizer in the IWW Grace and Queen Silver were influental supporters of evolution, and athiests. Lucy Parsons: Wife of Albert Parsons a haymarket Martyr, organizer for the IWW and Communist Party. Judi Bari: Radical enviromentalist, feminist, and member of the IWW and Earth First. Victom of a failed assasination, later died of cancer. Mother Jones: Helped form the IWW in 1905. One of the most well known organizers, and active socailists of the day. She would most likely be annoyed that liberals have a magazine named after her. Lesbia Harford: She was a well known poet in Australia, and a member of the Australian contingent of the IWW Amelia Siblich

This night our Lady and St. Joseph was going up to get registered and, um, they were going down the road and they met this man and he said, "Have you any room?" and he said, "No, but there's an old stable over there that I owned, if yous want to go into it." And they went over and the Lord came down from the heaven at twelve o'clock and loads of beautiful angels was with them, and when they were walkin'. I walk the streets of Dublin town It's eighteen forty-two It's snowing on this Christmas Eve Think I'll beg another bob or two I'll huddle in this doorway here 'Til someone comes along If the lamp lighter comes real soon Maybe I'll go home with him Maybe I can find a place I can call my home Maybe I can find a home I can call my own These three wise kings, um, they were all from different countries. And they always used to look up at the sky and they looked up this night and saw this beautiful star up in the sky. And when they were going they all meeted together and they had to pass King Herod's, not that we much care for him. And they went in and he said, "Where ye goin' with yer best stitches on ye?"
