Danse Macabre (first performed in 1875) is the name of opus 40 by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns. The composition is based upon a poem by Henri Cazalis, on an old French superstition: Zig, zig, zig, Death in a cadence, Striking with his heel a tomb, Death at midnight plays a dance-tune, Zig, zig, zig, on his violin. The winter wind blows and the night is dark; Moans are heard in the linden trees. Through the gloom, white skeletons pass, Running and leaping in their shrouds. Zig, zig, zig, each one is frisking, The bones of the dancers are heard to crack— But hist! of a sudden they quit the round, They push forward, they fly; the cock has crowed. According to the ancient superstition, "Death" appears at midnight every year on Halloween. Death has the power to call forth the dead from their graves to dance for him while he plays his fiddle (represented by a solo violin with its E-string tuned to an E-flat in an example of scordatura tuning). His skeletons dance for him until the first break of dawn, when they must return to their graves until the next year. The piece opens with a harp playing a single note, D, twelve times to signify the clock striking midnight, accompanied by soft chords from the string section. This then leads to the eerie E flat and A chords (also known as a tritone or the "Devil's chord") played by a solo violin, representing death on his fiddle. This originally aired on PBS in the 1980s featuring a poorly made up vampire host to introduce and discuss. It was also shown to me when I was in elementary school. One of the best short length Halloween animations ever created. Terrific illustrations. This project has been in my heart for a long time and Finally I've completed it. Danse Macabre or Dance Macabre is a brilliant piece of music in my opinion. I first fell in love with it when it was played during my music class in the third grade to introduce the instrument families. This music amazes me at how spooky and scary it can be yet it has a joyfulness about it. According to legend, "Death" appears at midnight every year on Halloween. This is the first animated film I ever made without assistance. It was originally just a project for my beginner's 3-d cgi animation class. This film won the "Best Animated Student Film" award in the Vision Film Festival for 2005. This film was very experimental for me at the time. I had just learned my pencil-cel animation techniques and I was beginning to understand the basics regarding cgi. I was also just learning the program and had to kind of "roll with it" to make certain things work. A little overambitious of me, perhaps. A lot of the effects in this film I had to learn off-the-cuff, and they didn't always turn out how I liked. Looking back on it now, I cannot help but wince at a few parts, because they didn't turn out exactly how I wanted them to, and I know that I can do so much better now. Still, it's an important early work for me, and I like to think that the flaws that are so obvious to me might be overlooked by a casual audience... The 3d parts of the movie were animated in Cinema 3d, and all of the models were constructed and textured by myself within that program, the only exception being the very best models; the skeletons, which were provided to me by a classmate, whose name I cannot recall (it has been so long), generously offered me the skeleton model he was using for his own project.
