I first met Jodi at a wedding back in October of 2009 when we first started transitioning from commercial work to weddings. I had heard of Jodi's amazing photography work before, but I never had the chance to work with her until that point (she was totally awesome). After the wedding we stayed in touch and I learned about Kurt, her camera wielding fiance (who now shoots with Jodi at every wedding). We all quickly became friends thanks to hilarious conversations, similar styles, passions for photography, and art. This friendship led to a contest earlier this year and teaming up to shoot quite a few amazing weddings together. A few months ago, Jodi & Kurt asked me to be the cinematographer for their wedding and I was absolutely thrilled that I would have the opportunity to film it. Jodi & Kurt style their shoots with DIY touches, vintage props, and lots of love and care for the details, so I knew their wedding would be nothing short of amazing. The ceremony and reception were held at Jodi's family farm in Mt. Crawford, Virginia and it was absolutely gorgeous (look out for the clip of the double rainbow). With so many vintage touches (I am pretty sure they raided every local antique shop) I decided to surprise Jodi & Kurt by filming some portions on Super 8mm film (Kodak Plus-X for those interested). This video clip is the result of interesting conversations I had with Darryl Digarrnga which started with the two of us listening to old field recordings of Arnhem Land traditional music. I asked Darryl off the cuff if he could play Bunggul style from NE Arnhem Land. He replied in the negative, saying that his grandfather David Blanasi, despite having traveled extensively through the NT, kept to his own style and taught Darryl not to encroach on the playing styles of other regions. He plays his own Gunborrk style, and leaves the Bunggul style to Miwatj people (Yolngu-speaking groups of NE Arnhem Land). Darryl uses the words 'steal' and 'stealing' when speaking of the appropriation of playing styles from other regions. The conversation led to me asking Darryl about Balanda who were interested in learning traditional mago or yirdaki playing styles... was this ok or not? Darryl's first response was that it was ok as they are Balanda and thus not subject to the same laws, restrictions or expectations that are applicable to 'tribal' people. However, when I brought up the issue of Balanda profiting from performing and teaching traditional styles, Darryl's response was different which was that only Aboriginal people should profit from teaching and performing traditional playing styles. However, some elders are against Balanda playing the didgeridoo at all, whatever style they play - traditional or contemporary. Darryl's own conclusion seems to be that it is ok for Balanda to ...
