The singer Abelardo Barroso Dargeles (Havana, 21 September 1905 27 September 1972) was the first sonero mayor (lead singer of the son) to be recognized as such by the Cuban public. He was the lead singer of the Sexteto Habanero from 1925, recorded with the Sexteto Boloña in 1926, and joined the Septeto Nacional de Ignacio Piñeiro in 1927. With each of these top bands he made a string of recordings in New York, and for the rest of his life his voice was in demand. In 19291930 he joined the stage variety group Salmerón, with whom he toured Spain. Returning to Cuba in 1931, he joined the Orquesta Ernesto Muñoz. In 1933 he founded the charanga LópezBarroso with Orestes López. He appeared alternately with this band and with the Sexteto Universo, and in 1935 founded the Sexteto Pinin. There followed spells with the bands of Andrés Laferté and Everado Ordaz before, in 1939, he joined the important charanga Maravillas del Siglo and performed on Radio COCO. During the 1940s he worked at the Caberet Sans-Souci until 1948, when he directed and sang for the National Police Band. Finally, set up his own band, Orquesta Sensación, another top-class charanga. They won the Disco de Oro for a recording of En Guantánamo and Arráncame la vida. With La Sensación he appeared in Miami in 1957 and in New York, 1959 and 1960. He retired in 1969. (less)

I made this video at the request of a viewer, and this is my piano solo adaptation of the famous Filipino kundiman 'Nasaan Ka Irog' (Donde estas, mi vida! (Where are you, my love?)). The kundiman is a traditional Filipino love song style, and the composer Nicanor Abelardo (1893-1934) is credited with raising it to art-song status. The Tagalog lyrics were by Narciso Asistio, and the most famous interpreter is probably Sylvia La Torre (1933- ), the 'Queen of Kundiman'. In my piano solo adaptation, I probably take it a little faster than a La Torre recording I heard (with orchestral backing), and in this form I think it takes on a little of the character of a (sentimentalised) Granados 'Goyesca'. I should say that this score required very little adaptation to make a piano solo, as the piano part almost always incorporates the vocal line. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Played by Phillip Sear www.psear.co.uk (less)

Soprano Mimi Kater and pianist Christina Yue give a moving performance of Mutya ng Pasig by Nicanor Aberlando. The poet is Deogracia A. Rosario. The performance took place at Central Lutheran Church on March 5, 2010, This is an excerpt from a class recital of the voice students of Milagro Vargas, University of Oregon School of Music This piece is a "kundiman." the Philippines signature love song. In the lexicon of the Tagalog (the official language of the Phillipines) the word mutya means, literally, "pearl" and, figuratively, "gem", "charm", and "amulet." In the Tagalog folklore, the mutya is a woman, a maiden goddess of the rivers, lakes, springs, seas and oceans - in short she is the "Mother of Waters." This beautiful Kundiman portrays a lost kingdom and a mythical past. (less)

Abelardo Barroso Dargélez (1905-1972) began his artistic career in 1925 as the leading voice of Sexteto Habanero, an outstanding grouping of that period. Later on, he joined the Boloña (harpsichord and prima voice), Nacional and Alabama Sextets. During the 1930s, Barroso joined the Orestes López Orchestra, a well-known danzón group also called Charanga López-Barroso, becoming one of the most popular interpreters at that time. In 1955, he performed as a tumbadora player in the Sans Souci Cabaret Orchestra. On August 23, 1953, Rolando Valdés had created the Orchestra "Sensación" at the Havana neighborhood "Los Sitios", and in 1955 he asked Barroso to record, together with his grouping, some of his old hits; Barroso agreed, starting a successful career as the most renowned soloist in all the most famous orchestras existing at that time. In July that same year, Barroso and the "Sensación" Orchestra reached an overwhelming popularity with their first record, including the songs "La hija de Juan Simón" and "En Guantánamo". During those years, they performed a long list of musical hits, such as "El Panquelero", "Tiene sabor", "El Guajiro de Cunagua", "La Macorina", "Con sabor a bombón" and "Bruca Maniguá." In 1957, Barroso and "La Sensación" reached a boom, becoming the most popular orchestra in musical broadcasting. This Orchestra, as well as the Conjunto Casino, were the only groups which appeared in a TV program on a daily basis. The "Sensación" Orchestra, based on the talent ... (less)

**** From THE PHILIPPINE GUITAR **** Where Are You My Beloved? - Requested by Efren last Dec but I only had the chance to study it last week. Angelo Favis' rendition of this piece is unmatched and if I can come close to it, I'd be happy. This is more or less a product of muscle memory and I was struggling to apply dynamics along the way. I'm aware of rushing through some sections which contributed to the gaffes. I memorized the piece so I can play it without glancing through 4 pages of sheet music. I also adopted Favis' version where he introduced a repeat of the major section with a variation. The piece requires a lot of finger stretching that are easily surmountable with constant practice. This is one of the best pieces in The Philippine Guitar book and is hauntingly beautiful when played correctly. (less)
