Paul Desmond plays Emily Monterey Jazz festival 1...
Views: 323,038Paul Desmond - November 25, 1924 - 1977. Alto Saxophonist. Born Paul Emil Breitenfeld. Musical genius. Composer of the jazz classic "Take Five". The song is the waltz "Emily" by Johnny Mandell (from the film "The Americanisation of Emily) performed at the Monterey Jazz festival in 1975. He played a Selmer Super Balanced Action Alto, a Gregory 4a-18m mouthpiece, and Rico 3-1/2 reeds and is seen here wearing "the suit". He stays fairly close to the lovely melody for the first 32 bars, and then off he goes. The effortlessness with which he spins beautiful melodic improvised lines is depressing (How did he do that?!!). This was the result of genius. He had total command of his instrument, having the ability to play far in to the altissimo register long before it became a studied discipline for the saxophone. And he just stands there, moving little more than his long fingers. No jumping, dancing, swaying, or crouching, just beautiful, swinging music. Note that he is quoting the waltz "Would You" at 2:35. He appears pleased with the result at 2:43. This is what brilliance sounds like.

JeanMarie Londeix Tribute Londeix Plays Scaramouc...
Views: 36,262I present a short tribute to the great concert saxophonist and educator Jean-Marie Londeix playing "Scaramouche - Vif" by Darius Milhaud circa 1975. He is the master of the modern saxophone and is also a master teacher. The accompanying photos are from a September 2006 visit by Mr. Londeix and Prof. William Street to a Saxophone Festival hosted by Prof. Larry Sheets. Phil had the great opportunity of playing for Londeix's master class and meeting Mr. Londeix and we were lucky enough to take a few photographs. Mr. Londeix and Mr. Street are great saxophonists, teachers, and gentlemen. We highly recommend reading the Londeix biography by James Umble available on Amazon and of ordering the CD collection "Jean-Marie Londeix Concertos/Chamber Music/Solo" also on Amazon to appreciate the depth of Mr. Londeix's mastery of the saxophone.

Views: 13,195Phil plays Tableaux de Provence mvt.1,2,3 for a Master Class held by Jean Marie Londeix at Lawrence University on Sept.22, 2009. This shares with the saxophone community the insight that the great saxophonist and educator Jean Marie Londeix has on the world of music. Professor Londeix's long career includes acting as Professor of Saxophone at the Bordeaux Conservatory and Dijon conservatory, performing in concert countless times, and making definitive recordings of some of the saxophone's finest literature. Jean Marie Londeix premiered Tableau de Provence in the late 1950's, and personally knew Paule Maurice. As with so much else in the classical saxophone genre, he is unequaled in his knowledge and experience. He premiered the Dubois concerto; the Denisov Sonate, the Murgier Concerto; Tableaux de Provence; Noda Improvisations; and amazingly to me performed "Scaramouche" with Darius Milhaud conducting. Due to Youtube time restrictions, this video is posted in 2 parts. The Londeix biography and Private Collections CD set is available at Amazon and I and highly recommend both as being essential to the classical saxophonist.

Cecil Leeson American Saxophone Pioneer
Views: 4,838This is still the only Cecil Leeson video on YT. Leeson was one of the great American Saxophone pioneers of the mid-20th century. He and Larry Teal were the two great American saxophone artists who brought the alto saxophone into the realm of classial music in America. An example of Leeson's importance is that Paul Creston wrote his saxophone Sonata Op.19 for Cecil Leeson. This recording is from an late- 1950s (1957 or 58?) LP of Cecil Leeson and String Quintet and is the only recording of Leeson I've found. This piece, written by Leon Stein, is a portion of the 3rd movement of his Quintet for Sax and Strings. I was forced to shorten it up and edit out purely string sections to give deference to Leeson's playing which includes a cadenza. I think it at least gives light to this seminal figure whose music otherwise seems lost.
