Day 5 of impeachment trial: List down your witnesses now AFTER A week-long absence from the impeachment trial, Senator-judge Miriam Defensor Santiago erupted with a blistering scolding of her colleagues as well as lawyers for both defense and prosecution panels and demanded to know how many witnesses and documents they intend to present during the trial. Santiago said it was about time both parties made clear how many witnesses they intend to present, with a summary of the testimonies they will make. "Huwag na tayo pa-epal dito," (Let us not grandstand) Santiago said. "Justice delayed is justice denied." "Nawawalan na ng gana ang mga nanunuod. To shorten the proceedings, how many witnesses do you intend to present," Santiago asked the prosecution and defense counsels. Santiago said that to be fair to all concerned, "and to determine the length of the trial," the two parties should present in writing a list of witnesses they intend to present, a summary of their testimonies that they will present, and a list of documents to be submitted. Confronted by Santiago, lead prosecutor Niel Tupas asked for three days to come up with their list. Lead defense counsel Serafin Cuevas in turn said they expect to present at least 15 witnesses to prove the innocence of Corona. Santiago said she wanted to correct the "misimpression" by many people, including her colleagues, that the impeachment was either political or judicial in nature. "It is both quasi judicial and quasi political, it ...

MANILA, Philippines -- Manny Pacquiao's strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza has reportedly bolted out of the fighting congressman's training camp as the Filipino boxer prepares for his June 9 title defense against Timothy Bradley. Pacquiao's co-trainer Buboy Fernandez told ABS-CBN News correspondent Jen Nievera that Ariza left the City of Pines at 6:30 am on Saturday. Manny Pacquiao's strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza. Fernandez could not say the reason for the conditioning coach's sudden departure from the team. Ariza has been an integral part of Team Pacquiao as he oversees the Filipino's conditioning, nutritional and supplemental needs during training. He engineered Pacquiao's successful ascent to several weight classes, while maintaining the Filipino champion's trademark speed and punching power. While Fernandez is confident that they can continue the fight preparations even without Ariza, he could not say who will take the place of the conditioning coach. Ariza is known to have bad relations with Pacquiao's Canadian adviser Michael Koncz and Top Rank CEO Bob Arum. Pacquiao's brother, Bobby, said one of the reasons for Ariza's departure is that the conditioning coach also needed to take care of his other clients. Among Ariza's priority clients is middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., who has an upcoming fight against Andy Lee. Ironically, Ariza's exit took place a day after Pacquiao's surprise birthday party for the fitness coach. After ...

And with some 500 guests as witnesses, Shalani Soledad was officially pronounced wife of Congressman Roman Romulo at around 6:45 pm One of the highlights of the ceremony, which began a little past 5:30 pm, was the homily of His Eminence Cardinal Gaudencio Rosales. The wedding was the first time Shalani saw her father, Adolfo Aguirre, and her mother, Evelyn Soledad-Yumol, together. But the bride walked down the aisle alone. Atty. Vitaliano Aguirre " How could you respect a person when that person herself does not show respect?" Lawyer who dared cross Miriam no stranger to controversy 29-Feb-12, 6:24 PM | Lira Dalangin-Fernandez, InterAksyon.com MANILA, Philippines — The man who admitted that he covered his ears while the verbose Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago was scolding prosecutors during Wednesday's trial was no stranger to colorful personalities. Lawyer Vitaliano Aguirre II, who stood up to the feisty senator, had served as lawyer for Senator Panfilo Lacson, Davao Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, and lead counsel of Hubert Webb in his murder-rape case. As deputy counsel for the Feliciano Commission's fact-finding investigation on the Oakwood, the 65-year-old Aguirre also conducted the direct examinations of now Senator Antonio Trillanes IV and other mutineers who participated in a failed occupation of a Makati City hotel years ago. Before being cited in contempt by the impeachment court, Aguirre faced the senator-judges, saying he covered his ears on purpose because he no longer wanted to hear the senator's "shrill voice." "Kung nakasakit ang actuations ko po, I really did it purposely because totoo naman po na shrill ang voice, nasasaktan ang tenga ko," Aguirre said. "Dapat po lamang na kahit ang senador ay judges at kami'y hamak na prosecutors, ang pinaka-importante sa isang tao eh respeto. If you demand respect dapat respetuhin mo rin ang abugadong ito sapagkat ang human dignity walang ...

Impeachment court subpoenas SC clerk of court, 12 others KIMBERLY JANE TAN, GMA News January 18, 2012 10:03am (Updated 11:25 am) The Senate, sitting as an impeachment court, has subpoenad the Supreme Court clerk of court and 12 others to testify during the imepachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona. In a phone interview with GMA News Online, impeachment spokesperson Valentina Cruz confirmed that they served on Monday the subpoenas for the SC clerk of court and 12 other witnesses who will be presented by the House prosecution team later in the day. "Sinerve namin kahapon [yung subpoenas] for those who were [asked] to appear today [Wednesday]," Cruz said. The House prosecution team had asked the impeachment court to subpoena Supreme Court clerk of court Atty. Enriqueta Esguerra-Vidal and bring with her copies of Corona's Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Networth from 2002 to 2011. Also asked to testify were the registers of deeds and city assessors of Quezon City, Marikina City, Makati City, Taguig City, Pasay City, and Paranaque City. The House prosecution team earlier asked the Senate to ask these government employees to bring with them documents related to the properties supposedly obtained by the chief justice and his family. The 13 witnesses will be made to testify on Article II of the Articles of Impeachment, which accuses Corona of failure to disclose his SALN. In connection with this, the prosecution had also earlier revealed that Corona allegedly owns 45 ...

As the USA and the Philippines carry out joint military exercise in the South China Sea, the tension in the region mounts. Russia finds itself being drawn into the territorial dispute between China and its neighbours On April 18 the Armed Forces of the USA and the Philippines began a big joint military exercise near the disputable regions of the South China Sea claimed by China. Despite the assurances of the US Military Command that these maneuvers are not aimed against the PRC, experts consider these exercises to be part of a new Asia-Pacific doctrine of Washington aimed at suppression of the growing impact of Beijing. For the first time Russia also found itself involved in the rising disputes over the belonging of the South China Sea regions that are rich in energy resources. The Balikatan (Shoulder-to-Shoulder) exercise that started on the Palawan Island and its surrounding areas will last till April 27. About 7 thousand men of the US and the Philippines military forces will be repelling mock terrorist attacks who will try to seize oil and gas facilities located in the sea. Besides the American and Philippine armedforces personnel, the military of Australia, Japan and South Korea will also take part in this exercise. "There is no reason to believe that our actions may threaten anyone. Our task is learning to react to emerging threats and challenges," Curtis Hill, a representative of the US Command, stated while answering the question about whether Beijing may perceive ...

Properties of Corona's daughters (Day 7 Highlights of Impeachment Trial) • During direct examination, Henares said the BIR was "surprised" to find out that Corona's daughter, Ma. Carla Constantino-Corona, only had a taxable income of P8,476 monthly in 2009; yet, she was able to buy a year later from her mother, Cristina, an P18-million property in La Vista, Quezon City. Henares said Carla only filed ITRs for the years 2008 and 2009. • Enrile asked Henares if the BIR has filed a tax evasion case against Carla, and Henares said the BIR was still investigating whether the property was donated to Carla by her parents or if it was illegally acquired. • Prosecutor Lim asked Henares about the BIR certificate for the sale of a lot in McKinley Hill, Taguig City, which was bought by another daughter of the chief justice, Maria Charina Corona, from Megaworld Corporation. • Henares said Charina has never filed an ITR, but was a one-time taxpayer in the McKinley Hills transaction • Henares said it is possible that Corona's daughter, Charina, would be able to explain how she was able to purchase multi-million-peso properties despite the lack of ITRs. • Senator-judge Ralph Recto noted that the capability of Ma. Carla Corona-Castillo, to buy the La Vista property was being questioned because she did not file an ITR and, hence, had no regular source of income. Recto was about to ask Henares if the BIR has reviewed the ITRs of Carla's husband, but he withdrew the question because the BIR ...

Day 16: 'Fake-ful reproduction' of bank records, no short lady and a tall tale 13-Feb-12, 9:23 PM | Abigail Kwok, Joseph Holandes Ubalde, Karl John Reyes, InterAksyon.com MANILA, Philippines -- Day 16 of the Corona impeachment trial opened and ended with extreme tension. It started with senator-judges severely scolding and threatening a contempt citation on defense lawyer for their Sunday night "bombshell" that Palace officials were offering P100 million each to senators to sway the impeachment court. And it ended with the senator-judges warning the prosecution they will be liable if it is confirmed they used fake documents to get the court to issue subpoenas on the Chief Justice's bank accounts. Amid a meandering testimony marked by confused responses from a bank branch manager on the peso deposits of Chief Justice Corona, senator-judges were startled when the witness said the purported bank documents attached to the prosecution request for a subpoena were "fake" and could not have come from the Katipunan branch of Philippine Savings Bank. The prosecution cause sank deeper into a quagmire after Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III reported that the court-ordered investigation by the Senate Sergeant- at-Arms did not turn up any sight of the "little lady" that House prosecutor Rep. Reynaldo Umali claimed had given him the questioned documents in a folder the other Thursday. Heeding the TRO The tension that accompanied the last few moments before adjournment simply mirrored ...

The Philippines' biggest warship was locked in a standoff yesterday with two Chinese vessels in the South China Sea, reigniting tensions in a decades-long dispute over the resource-rich waters. The Philippine government said the Chinese ships were blocking efforts by its navy flagship vessel to arrest Chinese fishermen that were found on the weekend to have illegally entered its territory. In a dramatic day of diplomacy, the Philippines summoned the Chinese ambassador in Manila and lodged a formal protest, but China insisted it had sovereign rights over the area and ordered the Philippine warship to leave. Philippine President Benigno Aquino III said he was looking to end the standoff through diplomatic means. "No one will benefit if we have violence," he told reporters. Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario said both sides wanted a peaceful resolution, but also cautioned that negotiations were at an "impasse" and his country was ready to defend its territory. "If the Philippines is challenged, we are prepared to secure our sovereignty," del Rosario said. The standoff was occurring at Scarborough Shoal (斯卡伯群島), just 124 nautical miles (220.6km) from the Philippines' main island of Luzon. China insists it has sovereign rights to all of the South China Sea. The Philippines says it has sovereign rights over areas of the sea within its 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone, and that its position is supported by international law. Taiwan, Malaysia ...

Palace: Talks will continue, but trust in MILF has limits 10/22/2011 | 12:24 PM While it said it will stick to the peace process despite the death of 19 soldiers in a clash with secessionists in Basilan, Malacañang on Saturday hinted there is limit to its trust and faith in the sincerity of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front. Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte, however, maintained the government will still exhaust all avenues towards peace because the human cost of going to war is too high. "It's not ever-faithful and ever-trusting... we are aware how high emotions are running but at this point, peace is the better option. The human cost of going to war is too high to take," she said on government-run dzRB radio, when asked if the government is still "ever-trusting" and "ever-faithful" to the MILF after this week's incident. For now, she said the government has mechanisms to avail of under the peace agreement. She said the military had already said it plans to file charges against those behind the killing. "We repeat, we are seeking justice at the right place at the right time. Claims that we are not giving due recognition of the sacrifices of our soldiers... is the farthest thing from the truth," she said. Valte also fended off speculations that President Benigno Aquino III had become protective of the MILF, after he met with the group's leaders in Japan last August 4. "It's a show of good faith. We sincerely believe the peace talks is something we should ...

Please donate to Philippine Red Cross: www.redcross.org.ph More than 650 dead in Philippine floods, hundreds still missing by: AFP THE death toll from mammoth floods unleashed in the Philippines by tropical storm Washi has climbed to 652 with 808 others missing, the Red Cross said . The devastated port cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan in Mindanao island accounted for most of the deaths, the agency said. It said 652 people were dead and 808 remained missing after the storm hit the south late Friday but more fatalities were likely to be confirmed in the coming days. ''The affected area is so wide and huge and I believe they have not really gone to all areas to do a search. Also, many of the houses were washed out so that means the houses and the bodies were displaced,'' said Gwen Pang, secretary general of the Philippine National Red Cross. ''We are only counting the actual dead bodies that were sent to funeral parlors,'' she said, warning many more bodies could still be found. Heavy rain from Washi on the southern island of Mindanao led to flash floods, swollen rivers and landslides, with the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan particularly hard hit. ''This thing happened so fast, it was very overwhelming. It happened in the evening when people were sleeping,'' said Pang. ''People were saying they were really unprepared. They didn't know it would hit them to this extent,'' she said. Fortunately, the waters receded quickly, in contrast to floods in the northern ...

Victim irked by younger brother RJ's sale of pickup By Marlon Ramos, Penelope P. Endozo Philippine Daily Inquirer 12:25 am | Tuesday, November 8th, 2011 WOMAN IN RED VEIL An immigration officer positively identifies the woman recorded in a monitoring center at the Bureau of Immigration in Intramuros, Manila, as Maria Ramona Bautista, a suspect in the murder of her own brother, Ramgen Bautista. Ramona left for Hong Kong on Friday at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1.BI CCTV /RICHARD REYES A production assistant of Ramgen Bautista on Monday said the rift between his slain employer and Ramon Joseph "RJ" Bautista, Ramgen's younger brother and a suspect in the murder, stemmed from a dispute over cars and allowance. Ronaldo Angcajas said the conflict started when RJ, 18, sold his practically new Mitsubishi Strada for P800,000. The vehicle was often used by Ramgen, 23, who was killed on October 28 at the family residence in BF Homes Parañaque City. Feeling shortchanged that the car was sold far below its actual value, Ramgen (Ram Revilla in show biz) reported the matter to their father, former Senator Ramon Revilla Sr., which in turn earned the ire of the younger brother. Angcajas said Ramgen had asked RJ to buy back the car but it was too late. The production assistant added that even if Ramgen had his own car, he often used the vehicle. "From then on, they hardly talked to each other. RJ said Ram was meddling too much," said Angcajas. RJ used the money from the ...

Speaking before the impeachment court for the first time, Santiago urged the other senator-judges to recall what happened during the aborted impeachment trial of former President Joseph Estrada 11 years ago in deciding how to deal with evidence in Corona's trial. Okay Sen. Santiago, you proved yourself as the best. Once or twice is enough but not everytime you are present in this trial. It is getting annoying now. Imagine how she will perform as international judge with such high temper, uncontrollable emotions and high blood pressure. Maybe she should quit that job. It is not worth dying during the impeachment trial. Like what Enrile said, no one is allowed to walk out of the trial. Hope it will not be her habit of screaming then walking out because of her excuse of having high blood pressure. Just my opinion. =========================== Day 6 Corona Impeachment Trial Leave it to Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago to get the snail-paced impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona moving. Scolding private prosecutor Arthur Lim, Santiago said: "Please don't treat me as a mere observer. I am a judge in this proceeding! In any trial court, ... you should not speak, you should not take any behavior at all unless with the consent of the presiding judge. Don't drown me out by screaming in this courtroom! Only I can scream here and my fellow judges!" Thus did Santiago deal a sudden end to the back-and-forth discussion among Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, the presiding officer; lead defense counsel Serafin Cuevas, and Lim over whether Internal Commissioner Kim Henares could testify on the income tax returns (ITRs) of Corona and his family. Lim, who entered his appearance at the court for the first time Wednesday, had been assigned ...

DSWD chief bears brunt of Sen. "You know what is good and evil because God says so? Oh, yeah? Did God speak to you, members of the Black and White Movement (BWM)?" Santiago fumed during a Commission on Appointments hearing Wednesday. Soliman is a convenor of the BWM, a group that was launched in mid-2005 to call for the ouster of the then President Arroyo. Last week, the BWM asked Corona to inhibit himself from the Supreme Court cases involving Arroyo, whom Corona served successively as chief of staff and spokesperson when she was vice-president, and as presidential chief of staff, presidential spokesperson and acting executive secretary. Santiago, who is friendly with Arroyo and her allies, has been expressing her irritation for some time over what she said was the BWM's interference in the decisions of President Benigno Aquino III, particularly on matters of government appointments. Philippine, Chinese vessels in Scarborough Shoal standoff Tina G. Santos Philippine Daily Inquirer Publication Date : 11-04-2012 A Philippine Navy ship and at least two Chinese vessels were locked in a standoff for a second day at the Scarborough Shoal (Philippine name: Panatag Shoal; Chinese name: Huangyan Dao) today after the Philippine Navy caught eight Chinese fishing boats poaching in Philippine waters and was about to apprehend them, the foreign office said. It said Foreign Secretary Albert Del Rosario had summoned the Chinese Ambassador Ma Keqing to a meeting to resolve the problem diplomatically. A statement from the Department of Foreign Affairs said the confrontation happened two days after a Philippine Navy surveillance plane found the eight Chinese fishing boats anchored inside the Panatag (Scarborough) Shoal on April 8. According to the DFA, the Panatag Shoal is an integral part of Philippine territory. "The Shoal is 124 nautical miles from the nearest basepoint in Zambales province. It is within the Philippines' 200 nautical miles Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and Continental Shelf," the DFA said. To protect the marine environment and resources in the Panatag Shoal and to assert Philippine sovereignty and sovereign rights over the area as a responsible coastal state, the Philippine Navy deployed the BRP Gregorio del Pilar (PF-15) from Palawan to Northern Luzon waters on the same day to conduct maritime patrol over the Shoal. A rainbow arches over the Philippines' Onuk Island after a rainstorm. Photographer George Tapan "showed a perfect sense of timing and composition in the way he captured the two small human subjects in this beautiful scene, and that really made the shot," noted judge Tim Laman. The "very moody, beautifully composed" image, called "Into the Green Zone," compellingly shows a sense of place via the dark clouds, rainbows, the spot of pink amid a palette of blues and greens, and the woman's flowing hair, said judge Amy Toensing. Peter Essick was also captivated by the detail of the woman's hair. It only "fills a fraction of the picture's real estate, but by capturing the movement at the apex, the photographer has documented a sense of style and flair," he said. Overall, the picture shows that "small things can sometimes make a big difference." photo location Onuk Island, Balabac Palawan, Philippines ngm.nationalgeographic.com blauearth.com

Quake kills 52 in Negros Oriental Many still buried in 10 meters of rubble By Alex Pal, Florence Baesa, Inquirer Visayas Philippine Daily Inquirer 12:34 am | Tuesday, February 7th, 2012 42 DUMAGUETE CITY—At least 52 people were killed when a 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit Negros and Cebu provinces shortly before noon Monday, causing landslides and huge cracks on highways, and violently shaking buildings, officials said. A three-story building collapsed, while seven bridges were rendered impassable, they said. In Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental, at least 29 people were feared dead following a landslide in Barangay (village) Planas, Mayor Ernesto Reyes said in a phone interview. He said there could be more fatalities in other barangays. "They were buried in 30 feet (10 meters) of soil. If you had been buried from noon until now (6 pm), I don't expect you to be alive," Reyes said. Rescuers dug with picks and shovels trying to reach dozens of people trapped under houses that collapsed, according to The Associated Press (AP). Ten others died due to a landslide at the Guihulngan national road, Reyes said. Governor Roel Degamo said a 9-year-old girl, Bernadette Raidan, died when a wall collapsed in Tayasan town. Twelve other fatalities were listed by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. Eight were from Guihulngan, one each from Jimalalud and Bindoy towns, and two from Tayasan. The earthquake, which struck at 11:49 am, was located 5 kilometers northwest ...

PHILIPPINES PUERTO PRINCCESA UNDERGROUND RIVER IS #6 IN TOP 7! WORLD'S NEW SEVEN WONDERS OF NATURE UNVEILED From correspondents in Geneva From: AFP November 12, 2011 6:56AM THE Amazon rainforest, Vietnam's Halong Bay and Argentina's Iguazu Falls have been named among the world's new seven wonders of nature, according to organisers of a global poll. The other four crowned the world's natural wonders are South Korea's Jeju Island, Indonesia's Komodo, the Philippines' Puerto Princesa Underground River and South Africa's Table Mountain, the New7Wonders foundation said today, citing provisional results. Final results will be announced early next year, said the Swiss foundation, warning however that there may yet be changes between the provisional winners and the final list. Sites which have failed to make the cut include Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro, the Dead Sea and the US Grand Canyon. The poll organised by Swiss foundation New7Wonders has attracted great interest, mobilising celebrities including Argentinian football star Lionel Messi calling on fans to pick his home country's Iguazu Falls. The results come after a long consultation process lasting from December 2007 to July 2009, when world citizens were asked to put forward sites which they deemed were natural wonders. More than a million votes were cast to trim the list of more than 440 contenders in over 220 countries down to a shortlist of 77. The group was then further cut to the 28 finalists by a panel of experts ...

One reason is that, in our country, liars have no fear of sanctions, much less of perpetual shame. Seppuku is such an unheard of ritual that one has to grudgingly admire Angelo Reyes for committing suicide after his integrity was placed under a cloud. Take retired associate justice Serafin Cuevas, the lead defense counsel in the impeachment trial. He stated in a media interview that "he was approached by someone from Malacañang and asked to leave the defense team" in exchange for withdrawal of the kidnapping case against former NBI director Magtanggol Gatdula. Cuevas subsequently denied having made that accusation [for a reason that one can only speculate on]: "That is not true. I did not say anything like that. I deny that!" His bad luck was that his statement was recorded on tape. His good luck was that the incident happened in the Philippines. Did it matter if the recording suggested that Cuevas was a liar or even a double-liar? After a few scathing commentaries in the media, the whole incident was forgotten. Cuevas is respectable once more. And who can forget the colossal truth told by Miriam Defensor-Santiago about how she had lied about leaping from an airplane? Would she have been expected to commit hara-kiri if she had pulled that embarrassing caper in Japan? But then, that's wishful thinking. The fact is that she made that statement in the Philippines. And, in our country, lying is nothing new. What, in fact, was new was Santiago telling the truth about her lie ...

Private prosecutor Vitaliano Aguirre had had enough of Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago and had the guts to stand up to her. In a hearing marked by high drama, Aguirre covered his ears with his hands while the prosecution panel was receiving yet another a tongue-lashing from Santiago, this time for its sudden decision on Tuesday to rest its case against Chief Justice Renato Corona. For that "contemptuous" behavior, Aguirre earned the ire of not just Santiago but the entire Senate impeachment court, which cited him in contempt on Day 26 of the impeachment trial, ironically a day after the prosecution had rested its case. "I charge this private prosecutor with contempt of this impeachment court! I have evidence right here taken by Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, and to say that nasaktan ang tenga ko (my ears hurt) should have been (a cause) for you to walk out of this impeachment court. But you cannot make those contemptuous gestures in front of a judge, and get away with it," Santiago declared. Cayetano himself took the picture using his cellular phone camera. Santiago made the motion to cite Aguirre in contempt soon after the volunteer lawyer candidly admitted to the impeachment court that he did cover his ears. "That's true because my ears already hurt," Aguirre said, while being questioned by Senate President Pro Tempore Jose "Jinggoy" Estrada. Estrada had inquired into Aguirre's motive for publicly displaying his disdain for Santiago. "It seemed that you don't want to ...

Los Angeles (CNN) -- Robin Lim, an American woman who has helped thousands of poor Indonesian women have a healthy pregnancy and birth, was named the 2011 CNN Hero of the Year on Sunday night. Through her Yayasan Bumi Sehat health clinics, "Mother Robin," or "Ibu Robin" as she is called by the locals, offers free prenatal care, birthing services and medical aid in Indonesia, where many families cannot afford care. "Every baby's first breath on Earth could be one of peace and love. Every mother should be healthy and strong. Every birth could be safe and loving. But our world is not there yet," Lim said during "CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute," which took place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles and recognized Lim and the other top 10 Many women in the developing world do not have access to contraception or maternal care. According to the United Nations Population Fund, three out of five women giving birth in South Asia do so without a skilled birth attendant on hand. In Indonesia, the average family earns the equivalent of $8 a day, according to the International Monetary Fund. But a baby delivery costs about $70 at a hospital, and a Caesarian section can cost as much as $700. Lim believes Indonesia's high maternal and infant mortality rates are caused in part by these costs, which many women cannot meet. "The situation is bad ... babies are unattended, deliveries have become commercialized, and mothers die from hemorrhage after childbirth because they can't afford ...

CORONA ASSEMBLES HIS DEFENSE TEAM FOR IMPEACHMENT ...

www.interaksyon.com Corona starts forming top-notch defense team By Marlon Ramos, TJ Burgonio Philippine Daily Inquirer 12:02 am | Friday, December 16th, 2011 TO RESIGN OR NOT He thought of resigning, Chief Justice Corona tells government lawyers attending a convention at a Manila hotel on Thursday. LYN RILLON Chief Justice Renato Corona has begun forming the legal team that will handle his defense at the impeachment trial that is to start in mid-January at the Senate. A number of "top-notch" lawyers have offered their legal services to Corona for free, Jose Midas Marquez, the Supreme Court administrator and spokesperson, said Thursday. But Marquez denied reports that veteran lawyer Estelito Mendoza, who occasionally serves as legal counsel of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, would lead the Chief Justice's defense. Earlier Thursday, the Senate formally summoned Corona to respond to the articles of impeachment filed by the House of Representatives against him. Senate Sergeant at Arms Jose Balajadia, accompanied by staff members of the chamber, brought the summons that included a copy of the 57-page verified complaint to Corona's office. Balajadia told reporters that the documents were received by Rogelio Jubilo Jr., a staff member in Corona's office, at 4:10 pm Valentina Cruz, the spokesperson of the impeachment court, said the Chief Justice had 10 days to respond. Senator Edgardo Angara urged his fellow senator-judges to look into the possibility of mediating ...

DAY 33 SEN MIRIAM SANTIAGO SLAMS ATTY EULALIO DIAZ...

SENATOR-JUDGE Miriam Defensor Santiago went full throttle against Land Registration Authority Administrator Eulalio Diaz, accusing him of gross negligence and malice for providing impeachment prosecutors a list of 45 properties allegedly owned by Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona that later turned out to be bloated. Both prosecutors and defense counsels have concurred that the list of 45 properties released by Diaz to lead prosecutor Niel Tupas last January 12 contained properties that had already been sold to other persons by the Coronas. Santiago had her turn with Diaz on the 33rd day of the impeachment trial. Diaz had already been severely criticized by Senator-Judges in his previous appearance before the impeachment court yesterday. Santiago however took another tack and unearthed Diaz' involvement with President Benigno S. Aquino III from several years back. President Aquino has been consistently pressing for the conviction of Corona by the impeachment court. Under questioning by Santiago, Diaz admitted that he was part of the Senate staff of President Aquino when he was still a senator. Too, Diaz admitted that he also served as a volunteer during President Aquino's presidential campaign in the 2010 elections. Further back, Diaz also admitted that he had been a grade school batchmate of Aquino at the Ateneo de Manila. Santiago said she found it hard to believe that these facts did not occur to Diaz when he drew up the list of 45 properties allegedly owned by ...
