Hewlett and Packard first met as undergraduate students at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. After graduation in 1934, Hewlett went to MIT to earn a master's degree in electrical engineering, while Packard worked at General Electric. Following these pursuits, both returned to Stanford—Hewlett to receive his degree of engineer and Packard to start a fellowship. During this time, the two were encouraged to contribute to the foundation of a technology community in the Palo Alto area, today known as Silicon Valley. In 1939 Hewlett and Packard established their enterprise in Packard's garage. A coin toss decided their company name—the result was the Hewlett Packard Company. Their first product was a resistance capacity audio oscillator, based on Hewlett's graduate work, which Walt Disney Studios purchased to produce Fantasia. Throughout the years, the company grew and outpaced competition through its technological innovations. Among its most notable accomplishments are the high speed frequency counter (1951)—used by radio stations to meet FCC requirements; the cesium-beam standard clock (1964)—sets international time standards; the first desktop calculator (1968); the first scientific hand-held calculator (1972); the first desktop mainframe computer (1982); and the successful HP Laserjet Printer series—a paragon in the industry. Originating in Packard's garage with $538 and two employees, the Hewlett-Packard Company has evolved as one of the world's largest ...

At what later became known as "the Mother of All Demos," Douglas Engelbart in 1968 publicly demonstrated the computer mouse, hypermedia and shared screen teleconferencing for the first time. His presentation at the Fall Joint Computer Conference in San Francisco received a standing ovation from 2000 astonished computer professionals who had never before seen a mouse-controlled cursor manipulate text. In fact, they had never before seen a text-only display, such as Engelbart had projected onto a large screen from a primitive mainframe computer located 25 miles away! His demonstration predated the first personal computer as well as word processing software. In 1997, he was awarded the $500000 Lemelson-MIT Prize.

Robert Dennard, who grew up in rural Texas and started school in a one-room schoolhouse, says he had a lot of time to think and read and contemplate. He recounts that he was always looking for better ways to do things, such as a faster way to chop kindling for the stoves. He later brought this penchant for improvement to IBM, where he developed the one-transistor dynamic random access memory (DRAM)—the paragon for low cost digital memory, ubiquitous in the computer industry today. At IBM, he also developed a significant theory on electronic device scaling, which has been a driving force in microelectronics. For these achievements, Dennard is the 2005 recipient of the $100000 Lemelson-MIT Lifetime Achievement Award.
