As Congresswoman, Gabby was a powerful advocate for energy independence and, as the only member of Congress with an active-duty military spouse, a dedicated voice for military families on the Armed Services Committee. Since her injury in January 2011, Gabby has courageously put one foot in front of the other, walking down the long road of recovery. This January, joined by close friends in Congress, she submitted her resignation from Congress, promising that she would one day return to public service. Gabby is a dedicated public servant, warm and compassionate, brave and inspirational, as well as tough and unstoppable. She is EMILY. Her continual demonstration of strength, wisdom, perseverance and grace are only a few of the reasons why we honor her. From Nita Lowey and Jolene Unsoeld in 1988 to Judy Chu in 2009, EMILYs List has changed the dynamics for women in politics. It hasnt been easy bringing these women into office, but we have taken every opportunity to find good candidates, help them put their campaigns together, raise money, and mobilize women voters to go out and support them, said Ellen R. Malcolm, president of EMILYs List. We know that women have the talent and the passion to make a difference, and in the House and the Senate right now our women are doing the work that will to move our country forward. It is important to celebrate these milestones and marvel at how far weve come since 1988, when there were just 12 lonely Democratic women in the House, continued Malcolm. Our work is far from done. At 17 percent, women are still far from parity in the US Congress, but every victory brings us one step closer.

Views: 253"A major motivation for me to run for Congress is... it dates back a few months. My brother, who is my older brother, only three years older than I, actually just 52 years old. He was diagnosed with cancer, and it was a rare form of cancer. And her required experimental treatment. And even though he was fully insured he was not able to get the treatment that he needed because it was deemed experimental. So our family and our friends and his friends and loved ones had fundraisers to help pay for treatment. My sister in law, his wife, had to manage the coordination of his care which I can tell you was so complicated when you've got a loved one going through something like this. You know, I take a look at that and I realize that if you're not educated or if you don't understand the health system or if you don't have resources just how difficult something like that can be. And it does motivate me to try to make a change in that. I've worked in health care for the last 10 years of my career so I do know I little bit more about that. I do want to bring my background and my expertise in health care to help others and I hope I'm able to do that."
